Social Impact Internship Scheme
Spend your summer with an exciting, inspiring & innovative social impact organisation.
6-8 weeks over the summer
Bristol, Oxford, London, Cambridge, Winchester and Southampton
If you'd like to spend your summer interning with a social impact organisation in the UK then look no further - applications are open NOW until February 28th at 5pm.
We find students make the most of this opportunity if they have already been involved in some social action or volunteering so we advise you to get involved in some other Student Hubs activities in semester one!
If you want to gain valuable skills and experience, meet like-minded people and work on a meaningful project with some of the UK's most exciting, innovative and inspiring social impact organisations this summer, you're looking in the right place.
How does it work?
The Social Impact Internship Scheme places students who are passionate about social change with host organisations that are creating social impact.
Successful applicants are placed in a summer internship where they are given the opportunity to take responsibility over their own roles or projects.
Alongside their placements, interns get access to exclusive training featuring sessions designed to equip them with the skills and knowledge they need to pursue a career in the social impact sector.
This is your chance to make a difference whilst gaining work experience, great contacts, new skills and an insight into the world of social impact careers.
Internship applications are open - click the link above! You can also sign up to the The Week for updates on the Scheme and our other initiatives.
If you have any questions in the meantime, get in touch with Lily at manager@cambridgehub.org.
Why do we do it?
We're trying to make it easier for you to get work experience so you can figure out what you want (or don't want!) to do. We want to help passionate and talented students get the skills, training and contacts they need to pursue a social impact career.
We select a group of outstanding students looking to get experience, and then place them in summer internships with some of the UK's leading social impact organisations. There's a range of work interns could be doing - from communications to fundraising to impact analysis and anything else that goes on at a social impact organisation! We work with host organisations to ensure that interns placed with them are working on an exciting and meaningful project.
We want to match students to organisations where they have the opportunity to gain those skills and experiences whilst meeting like-minded people and learning about social impact.
What do we do?
We run the Social Impact Internship Scheme in 4 steps:
Step One: We invite students from Hub universities to submit applications in the new year. We ask students to submit a CV and outline their motivation for becoming a Social Impact Intern.
Step Two: We invite successful applicants to an interview, at this stage we will discuss your availability and location preferences.
Step Three: We invite some of the most innovative and inspiring social impact organisations in the UK to host one of our interns, providing them with a useful and meaningful project or role to complete over the summer.
Step Four: We then do our best to match the right intern to the right project. We also provide ongoing support to both interns and organisations - interns are given access to exclusive training opportunities whilst host organisations are advised on how to best work with their intern.
What's the time frame?
January-February: We invite students from Hub Universities (Bristol, Cambridge, Kingston, Oxford, Oxford Brookes, Winchester) who can demonstrate an active interest in social impact to apply to the Scheme.
March: We'll let you know if you've been successful in your online application. Successful applicants will be invited to an interview at their local Hub.
If you're successful at the interview stage, we'll let you now that you've secured a place onto the Scheme.
April onwards: If you've been accepted onto the Scheme, you'll receive pre-internship training and we’ll start the process of matching you to a host organisation.
June - September: As our internships are flexible, they can take place anytime between May to September (though you will be matched according to your availability).
September: On completion of your internship, you will be invited to a final training session to plan the next steps in your social impact journey and to give us feedback on the Scheme.
Equality & Inclusion
Cambridge Hub is committed to making our activities inclusive to all students. We can make reasonable adjustments to application processes, interviews, training sessions, and activities on a case-by-case basis. We also provide ongoing support for the students we work with, so if you have particular accessibility needs, including special educational needs, please do get in touch and let us know how we can make the activity more accessible.
Previous interns have said
“I've learnt so much over the eight weeks and my confidence has grown. I've realised I am capable of things that I never thought I was capable of.”
“It has given me valuable experience in the not-for-profit sector that I would have struggled to get otherwise, and now I am successfully interning at another charity as a result!”
“My internship was an excellent experience of taking on real responsibility in a growing charity and the scheme has given me a stronger career direction.”
