About the Project
Do you like cooking and kids, and want to support local families? Volunteer for 'Thyme to Cook', a free ongoing cookery club for families with young children in Arbury and King's Hedges (Cambridge), where participants prepare and eat healthy, low-cost food together, in a friendly environment. The workshops are organised by Cambridge Sustainable Food, and are led by a trained chef and assistant.
The club takes place at Arbury Community Centre, Campkin Road, Cambridge CB4 2LD. Directions can be found here.
Cambridge Hub has partnered with Cambridge Sustainable Food for the second term running to offer opportunities for students to volunteer at these cookery workshops, which aim to help families learn new skills and how to cook healthily on a tight budget. From January to March 6 students volunteered at the sessions, and this partnership was such a success that we are hoping for more students to join.
Our former project coordinator, Minerva, says: "Volunteering with Thyme to Cook has been one of the most valuable experiences of my year in Cambridge. The children never fail to make me smile, and I have learned so much about both social issues in Cambridge and about how healthy, nutritious food and a happy and safe environment can go a long way in addressing these problems. I would encourage anyone who has an interest in making our world a little bit better to volunteer at the workshops - you won't regret it!"
Get Involved
Volunteers are needed from 3.30pm-6.30pm on Tuesday afternoons on a regular basis to help with setting up, cookery activities, keeping younger children occupied and clearing up at the end. And of course you get to share the food with the families afterwards and make new friends.
To become a volunteer, please get in touch at lucie@cambridgesustainablefood.org. In order to preserve continuity for the participant families, we ask that you commit to a minimum of 4 sessions.
